No one has properly explained the display and it took me hours and hours of trying to decided based on negative or lack of information, but I finally bought it anyways and here is my findings after having it for one month and using it regularly:

As many of the other reviews have said, this is a solid, well built treadmill. I find it quiet. Heavy! But I have no problem moving it within the area it is in, but I am a big guy. I would buy it again and again. I really like being able to watch my TV while working out.

1) Reviews: You will find this highly reviewed by those that reviewed it here, on Consumer Reports (highest rated for a folding treadmill), and other consumer sites or equipment sellers agree.

2) Fan - FUNNY to me, but some folks seem really ripped up over the weak fan. Well, it does work and on high it is nice to have but still weak. BUT non of the gym machines have a fan and it does help some, so I see it as a plus and at worse just not that useful. I setup my own fans - seems a simple solution to me.

3) Display - the two "bubble" displays are for only the incline and speed (For the modes I have tried which is manual, hill, speed, calorie countdown-I assume for all modes this is the case), which means you have access to these two items at all times. The display below is multi-use. Other reviewers complain that words are scrolled by 2 letters at a time for "action" messages and I agree this sucks(action messages are like: CO OL DO WN). BUT - those items will not matter as you use it since you brain will learn to read and remember what is what(at least my brain has no problems after a month). Also, the 2 letter scroll is mostly used at the beginning when you select the mode (manual, hill, custom, etc) and at the end when you get a summary (which by the time you get off it, I bet you are like me, you are counting the calories and time, so you already know those items). In this area (The multi-use) also you get your calories, time elapses or count down to zero, etc. You have to cycle through it, which is the same as the gym I go to. Anyways, it would have been better if they just displayed all the time, but they don't. But it isn't a major issue, just select the toggle button to cycle through to it.

4) Buttons - I copied this from another review and comment afterwards: "Several of the buttons on the display have "modes", and it is not always clear which mode you are in. For example, the "Enter" key doubles as the "Cool Down" key. When you enter your speed, it is not clear if you are to key in your speed and press the "Enter" key, or key it in and wait for the treadmill to speed up. If you are unsure of which mode you are in and you press the "Enter" key at the wrong time, you've just ruined your workout, and need to shut the machine off and reprogram it to continue your workout."

My response: This is true - this was a bad design, BUT there is an very easy work around I found as I had the same problem. You just need to use the up or down arrows under the SPEED section - problem solved!!! Now - I am a walker, I could see if you where on 7 and need to get to 2 fast, that this could be a factor, but the arrows speed down or up the treadmill fast. Also note this is only a problem as the "enter" key double for the "Cool Down" key, but for incline you can select the incline and hit it's enter key and not worry. Also, you can use the up and down arrows under the incline (Left side) label as well. Both Speed (On the Right side) and Incline (Left Side) on different sides of the console.

If you program it wrong for a work out, say 20 minutes instead of 40 minutes, you have to stop and reset the machine. The gym machines let you add time as you work out and this one does not. I just set it for 90 minutes and let it count backward, if I am done in an hour, so what that it has 30 minutes left. For me, this was not a big issue.

5) Instruction Manual - Not clear and screws not always label correctly. But if you take your time and count the screws and figure where each goes, you should be fine. BUT they should correct this. Also, no instructions on how to lubricate the deck when you need too and no pictures on where to adjust the belt (hint: at the back end of the deck are two holes with screws that you turn with the allen wrench - manual says something like on a hub which made me think it was on the front of the deck as there are two caps covers over the front of the deck - These do not get removed!!). It took me 2 hours to put together - but I stopped 10 times to do other things - I would guess an hour. Aside from the screw and bad labeling, the actual assemble was pretty easy for me - I use to be a PC tech, so I am tool inclined (good with tools).

6) Delivery - I buy more from Amazon then anywhere else and I buy a lot and Amazon is my favorite place since price and reviews are great! BUT, I did pay the extra $100.00 to one of the big chains to have it delivered inside the house and am glad I did with the reviews of others saying the delivery folks that contract with Amazon may just leave it in you driveway! How silly! Pay the extra $100.00 have it delivered inside and up or down two flights of steps. HINT: 3 of the chains use the same supplier even though the webpages are different, if you look, you will see that returns for all 3 go to the same place and BOX number!!! They all use the same supplier and I believe the same web developers as most of the text is the same on the webpages. OH - and, also not tax as well, at least in Maryland - so I pay a 100.00 more to get it delivered.

7)Heart monitors(hand and wireless) - Many folks have said that the hand grips don't work for them or it takes a long time. Mine works great and fast (I am a walker - so maybe those that run are the ones having problems with it with the pounding on it from running? Anyways, my works great and as well as the wireless band that fits around you chest. BOTH works great for me.

8)Build materials - Seems really well built. I am 260 guy and it has no problems working for me and doesn't shake when I run (occasionally only) The 20 x 60 deck is great. Deck is easy to fold up and has a weight system inside which helps make it easy and light to fold up and to fold down slowly. I also agree with other that these machine seems to be "commercial" quality. Time will tell.

9)Help line - I had to call to ask where you adjust the belt. They answered pretty quickly and was able to help me for whatever that experience may give you.

SPECIAL NOTES:

For incline to work, you apparently need to do the calibration sequence on page 28 before the incline feature and maybe other things too. No problem - just takes a minute and is easy.

NEVER USE WD-40: To lubricate your belt. According to Nautilus, this is something a lot of people do, and any consequential damage will NOT be covered by your warranty. Some posted a how to in their review.

This is the best treadmill you can buy for the cost. I wasn't sure what to expect from a lower cost treadmill but this thing has exceeded my expectations. It is sturdy and well built, the motor is relatively quiet and has a very comfortable surface. You have to adjust the incline manually and there is only 4 training programs but for the price of this thing the extra features aren't missed. If you are looking for a great treadmill for a good price without all the bells and whistles , this is the one you are looking for.!!!!!!!!!!!!!

After reading quite a few reviews I was under the impression that this was a very sturdy treadmill. It has a much higher weight tolerance than most home models in this price range and a heavy duty deck. Unfortunately when I set it up at home and began running on it, I found that it's not quite a sturdy as it claimed. There is still a definite unsteady feel and it does shake. While walking it's great, the fan is a nice option but if you're a frequent runner, I would opt for something more substantial.

Bought this treadmill about 18 mo.'s ago in July 2007.

The Good: Solid, sturdy treadmill. Clearly not a cheap piece of junk. Not difficult to assemble. East to fold up (we don't really use that feature but I've tested it and it's not a problem).

The Bad: If you get a defective one, you're stuck; good luck trying to get it repaired, and good luck trying to return it. The problem with our treadmill (Bowflex Series 3) is that the running deck is at a permanent incline/elevation even after an attempted repair. First, we had to wrangle with Bowflex to get them to send someone out to look at it. When Bowflex did send someone out for us, the guy told my wife that the treadmill deck angle was "normal" and that there was nothing wrong with it. Luckily I work close to home, because I had to come home from work and argue with the guy! When I got my 6 foot level out and showed him that the degree of incline was in excess of 15 degrees, he finally relented and agreed that there might be a problem. He then - lo and behold - discovered a problem with the motor-mount and bowflex agreed to send a part and have it repaired. It's been a year since the "repair," and it's better - at about a 5% elevation now - but still not right. I also use the treadmills at the gym in my office building and it's clear to me that our treadmill running deck angle is not "normal." I'm all for running on hills, but not 100% of the time!! So, I now have a board under the rear wheels to help make the treadmill level (in case you're wondering, the floor under the treadmill is perfectly level). Anyway, just what you want with a $1000 treadmill right, a board under the back end.

I'm not saying that all Bowflex treadmills are bad, but I do caution you that you may be gambling with your $1000 because you risk getting a defective one. You also risk not having the company repair the product properly even if they are willing to send someone out to look at it. Also, our problem occurred about a year ago, but I've seen a recent reviewer state that bowflex now refuses all responsibility for treadmills sold through Amazon. If I were purchasing this treadmill, I would sure want to find out whether that's true before plunking down my grand.

After set up and 60min breakin I found the TM to be quiet and smooth. I needed something for our small home and find it's size to be what I was looking for. I'm 71 and was noticing a problem getting around so I wanted to get moving. I don't really enjoy walking the neighborhood and wasn't interested in a gym so this TM suits me well. I vary my 30min workout manually between 2 and 3.5 mph which is enough to work up a sweat and strengthen my legs again. I'm satisfied with this purchase.

I purchased this unit a few months ago. When i put it together it was still not working. I then called the number in the manual but was disconnected. I then though maybe i put it together wrong so i called a treadmill repair man. He came to look at it and told me that it was not put together right by the company. I kept trying to call but there was no working number. The other number keeps you on hold for 45 minutes before going o an answering machine. We've had this treadmill for several months and it gets regular weekly use. First off, it's heavy...which we like because the heft lends the treadmill stability, an important quality when running; the treadmill doesn't shift or move around due to the pounding it receives. However, the treadmill IS easy to move around (when you WANT to move it); the running deck easily folds up and then you can position it without fuss using the wheels underneath. We VERY much like this feature! Its weight is also due to its solid construction. This machine doesn't seem to have many flimsy, plastic parts. It was fairly easy to put together and a nice feature is the audio speaker setup that comes with the treadmill. With the supplied cable, you can easily hook up an iPod and the output is very decent. Why not five stars? My wife mentioned that she would like a number pad so that a person can just enter, numerically, what speed they would like to run rather than pushing the, "faster," button multiple times to set your desired speed. It's not a deal-breaking factor; just for information purposes only. Overall, it's a good addition to our home gym.

i received this item 3 days before it was scheduled. i was able to have it assembled and ready to use in about 10 minutes. i believe i am in decent shape, and i began feeling the workout in about 15 minutes. i didn't notice the belt slipping and it folds up very nicely, with a smal footprint when not in use. i should mention that i am kind of a short guy, about 5'7", so my stride is short, which made jogging fairly easy. anyone with a longer stride would probably have a hard time running on this, as the belt area is fairly short. all in all i am very happy with this purchase.

I would have to say I researched buying a treadmill for some time and came upon this one for many reasons. 1. it was in my price range. I also saved $87 dollars on the shipping. As for shipment , it came fast and was in mint condition. Setup, was easy. This machine is a sturdy piece of equipment. Doesn't feel cheap. I will say I wish it would fold up more vertical but with all the features it is more than satisfactory. Smooth Fitness 5.45 Folding Treadmill

Like the other reviewers have mentioned, this treadmill is HUGE. I've owned 3 others in the past and this one has the biggest "head unit" (where the display is located) of any I've owned. The belt seems a bit narrower because I am always nicking the sides when I run.

The display is pretty good, but if I have one complaint other than the non-colored characters (blue or orange would have been better to see in low lighitng): The Speed and Distance swap. I honestly thought from the manual I had downloaded and reading the description that these would both display all the time. To me, these are two things that should ALWAYS be shown. Other things that are less important ARE shown: Heart Rate, Incline percentage (who the heck needs to see that ALL the time?), and Calories burned. Time is also shown separately, but I do consider this one to be important. To me, the items that should ALWAYS show on their own are Speed, Distance, and Time. The rest can swap. Heart Rate especially seems like a strange item to always display since you have to grip the bars to get anything other than "P" displayed.

The reason this layout bothers me is if you happen to end your workout while the Speed/Distance part of the display is on the Speed, you will never know what the Distance was unless you restart the treadmill and let it run until it's time for the Distance to display again. This is what really causes me to give this treadmill a 4 and not a 5.

But this brings me to something that I didn't see explained in the manual that IS a big bonus: when you press Stop it is actually only Pausing so that you CAN continue to work out with the last known stats as long as the treadmill hasn't been powered down (which happens after a few minutes of non-use) or as long as you haven't pressed Stop twice. The button is not labeled Pause, though, so it's not necessarily intuitive.

As for its performance, the only treadmill I had that was as comfortable was my Vision Fitness. This thing runs smoothly, feels comfortable, and costs about four-hundred dollars less than the Vision Fitness. I've only had it for about 3 weeks, but I run on it at least 2 times per week and walk all the other days. It seems durable and doesn't shake much at all. The drink holders could be a bit wider (or maybe just one of them), but it holds a bottle of Propel just fine. I didn't get my free water bottle for some reason.

I bought this direct from Smooth and had the White Glove/complete install service. I agree with the reviewer who said PAY the EXTRA. Seriously, it's humongous and I can only imagine how much a pain it would be getting it inside my house. The people who put it together are the delivery folks, though, and they told me they get to see a short video on how to assemble ONE model of Smooth's treadmills. It showed. They got it done, but treadmill pros would've taken a lot less time and gotten less confused. All in all, I am quite pleased with this treadmill, however. I'd go for a smaller one in an apartment unless you don't bother with furniture.

Sole F63 Treadmill (2009 Model)

The F63 is the best treadmill in it's price range. I know because I basically tested out every single one I could find in my price range. This machine by far is the best one. It was pretty heavy to bring inside, I'd recommend having a friend or two to help get it in the home. It was an easy set up though, some reviews I read said the machine was too big but the dimensions I found on the machine were accurate so I just measured in the room where it was going and it fit perfectly.
It's been about a month now and I haven't had any issues. I haven't been using all the programs as much as I thought mostly because I just like the cardio best. I'm too weak to use just the manual I wouldn't challenge myself enough if I did. I need that program to keep me consistent.
All in all I'm happy with this treadmill.

I will never order from this company again and would caution others.
I ordered this treadmill on January 20 2009. Deadline for delivery was February 10. Received confirmation from Amazon but never from Brookstone who was sending the item. On the 10th I sent an email through Amazon to Brookstone that I never received it but was charged for it anyway. 2 DAYS later I got a reply stating more research was needed..whatever that means.

Sent another email on the 17th. No answer. Finally I had to file a claim with Amazon under the A-Z guarantee. On the 22nd Amazon notified me that they had issued a reimbursement to my account and that it might take a couple of days for me to notice.

Today on the 24th I received an email from Brookstone stating that the vendor had lost the package and had it delivered back and that if I would like to reorder...NO THANK YOU. For a $500 purchase I would expect better communication when a problem arrives.

I thank Amazon for being so involved and standing behind their customers.
Never have had a problem ordering with any of their companies till now and they demonstrated how trustworthy they are. As for Brookstone, they have a lot to learn about customer service.

After doing a ton of research on treadmills for months, this treadmill had everything I wanted. The number one feature which led me to this treadmill is the hand controls on the rails to increase and decrease speed and incline. You do not see a lot of treadmills with this feature. I am the kind of person that gets bored easily but not with this treadmill. The display is incredible and very well lit. Very quiet motor - I didn't even have to turn up the radio. Super smooth riding belt. I also love the 20X60 belt. What more can I say except it was money well spent! Sole - Thanks for the wonderful treadmill!

This product was pretty much what I expected. It was not too difficult to assemble. However, it should come with some lubricant for the belt, it was a bit "jerky" at the beginning. After using some lubricant on the belt it was much smoother.

There are other treadmills out there with a lot of extra features that are nice but they are also massive. The TR 2000-HRC does everything you need quietly and with a minimum footprint. I love that the motor box is not in front as I alway bumped into that with my last machine. I wish it had an MP3 jack but I am thrilled with the choice of this machine. The only reason I give this 4 stars instead of 5 is the lack of an MP3 jack.

A great buy! The treadmill arrived within 2 weeks of ordering it. It was easy to put together, and with two of us working on it, it was done within 30 minutes. My husband and I each use it daily to run. It works well at high speeds for average weight people. We couldn't decide between the 3 and the 5. So glad we got the 5. The extra length is really worth it. Fairly easy to figure out, although the elevation doesn't seem to be working. It may be easy to fix, but we wouldn't really use it anyways. The treadmill feels really solid, like a professional gym type. My complaint is that it takes a few seconds for it to start the band moving and a while for it to get up to speed, which can skew the end results. But overall, we love it and was certainly worth the price with free shipping. I would purchase it again any day.
Also we just put the treadmill on an extra piece of carpet in the basement and it stays put just fine. No need for an expensive "special" mat for underneath.

I had done a lot of research on the Net before purchasing my sports equipment. Sole appeared to beat most other brands when it came down to quality and price.
This is my second Sole purchase (first one was their E95 Elliptical)and I am yet to be disapointed! Love the quality of these machines, and more importantly - the results I get within a short period of time.
They are a little on the heavy side though (especially - the treadmill), so don't plan on moving your equipment once assembled, and assemble it where you intend on keeping it :-).
Overall, these two machines are the reason I stopped going to the gym altogether; I no longer have to waste my time dealing with parking, waiting for a piece of equipment, or just dealing with an overcrowded workout environment altogether. I can now work out conveniently and consistently, and thanks to Sole - with great results

first off, i bought this tradmill back in january of this year and only now am staring to use it! the shipping was excellent (the driver not so much) as their was no damage to the box at all. I unpacked it a fews days after delivery to 'check out what i bought' and then left it alone for another few weeks while i ..... well no real reason but laziness. then after finally putting it together - the motor starts, but the top-panel doesnt. argh. so a few more weeks go by before i call horizon c.s. (their hours are really odd btw) but once i reach them, they were fantastic! they shipped me replacement parts with no questions asked. upon receipt of the parts (unexpectedly via next day courier) i realized that i had no idea what to do with them so another few weeks (read: months) i called again and they sent a tech out at no charge to assist me. turns out, one of the wires i hooked up was not done correctly, so the whole time it was my fault but they still did not ask for a service call fee. most excellent!! now that i am using t, it feels solid and well built. the console controls take some learning to understand and use, but that is to be expected. i really like this unit and horizon fitness is great to work with!

I just recently purchased a treadmill for the first time, and it was recommended to me that I wax it every 3 months, not the every 6 months indicated in the manual since I run on it alot.

I ordered this wax kit and it received it pretty quickly without any complaints.

The instructions were pretty simple to follow, and the actual application of the wax on the "wand" and then on the treadmill, in thoery, were fairly simple as well.

I only gave the product 3 stars for the following reasons:
1. the lube is quite runny and it did drip on things as I maneuvered it onder the treadmill belt.
2. the applicator wand is NOT designed for wide treadmill decks (I believe mine is 22" wide) so it was VERY hard to move the stick up and down the deck because my belt was just slightly wider than the stick. Now only was it difficult to move, the edge of the belt tore my fingers up in the process.

In the end, the lube does do it's job, it's just not super easy getting it there if you've got a wide deck.

I researched treadmills for 3 weeks before deciding on this Horizon model. My husband and I both wanted to be able to do Cardio at home in the mornings before work. Previously, we had owned a Reebok and while it was tolerable, we were looking for better overall quality and durability this time around. I ordered this machine on a Wed. morning, Amazon shipped it that afternoon via ABF Freight and it was delivered to my driveway 48 hrs later. (We subscribe to PRIME and FYI--it is fabulous and well worth it!) No damage whatsoever. They do not bring it in and it is very-very heavy so have a helper or dolly on hand. We had it up and running in about 35-40 mins.

Pros:
1. This machine is durable. Unlike our old Reebok, my 200 pound husband can run flat out without feeling like the treadmill may break. We each use it daily and I believe that it will last us years.

2. I like the longer length and wider width of the track for running.

3. I also like the fan and while I don't use the mp3/Ipod speakers (we have a stereo in our workout room) they would be convenient for someone who does.

4. Bright, easy to read screen

Cons:

1. The only real con that I have come up with is pretty minor in the scheme of things--the main on-off switch is located on the bottom front of the machine. You can turn the machine on and off via the screen, however the screen remains lit and undoubtedly still draws electrical energy. Thus you have to turn it off each time via the main switch on the front bottom which is a problem for us because we keep the treadmill facing a wall. Slight inconvenience, so it loses one point for that.

Overall I would absolutely buy this machine again, it's a good buy.

I had an Ironman mat that was a bit shorter (6.5') but looked the same as the one in this picture. The review by CCody is my experience as well, this mat wont stop heavy rubber off-gassing. This would be bad enough in normal circumstances, but add to it that you are potentially breathing very hard next to the mat (you are exercising) and it is not going to work at all. I went so far as to leave this mat outside for two weeks, but this did no good. The off-gassing continues, I'm sending it back.

My guess is that 80% of us who buy treadmills use them 10 times or so, then use them as a laundry rack thereafter. Another 15% of us use them until they break, but never think about maintenance.

This package is a good deal if you are in the last 5% - the people who use their treadmill and are willing to tune it up every few months. If so, good for you. Your body and your treadmill will both thank you.

This kit has five parts:

1) A compressed air can that is handy for blowing dust out of the hard-to-reach areas of the treadmill.

2) Belt cleaner to clean off the walking belt. (Enough for four cleanings).

3) 2 doses of lube to go between the walking belt and the unit.

4) Some "belt dressing" to clean off and condition the drive belt, inside the unit.

5) A basic but clear manual explaining how and when to use the other items.

I used my treadmill for about a year, until it started to develop a severe squeak, then figured I would try this kit. Cleaning the treadmill and lubricating the two belts has helped a lot, and the squeak has been gone for the last several weeks. This stuff has a very strong smell -- like WD-40 or something. If you can stand the smell, you might as well buy a can at the local hardware store -- at least then you'd probably get a little straw that could be used to spray it under the center of your treadmill belt.

I bought this stuff because I thought it would be odorless, like all other treadmill lubricant I've bought. But it isn't odorless. It really stinks. I don't like that permeating smell in my house, especially in my workout room.

I recommend the LifeSpan 100% silicone lubricant. It's a little pricier for the quantity you receive, but it's the good (odorless) stuff.

Product was delivered with extreme efficiency - even sooner than I had expected, based on Amazon's delivery window estimate. I've been using the new walking belt on my treadmill for a couple weeks now. It's better than new (in the sense that I bought my machine used, and this is the first time the belt was changed.) It's nice that this product comes pre-lubricated, with a recommendation to apply the provided tube of lubricant after about 6 months of use. If the original owner had been as diligent about properly maintaining the belt, I might not have had to replace it yet. My only complaint about this product was in the instructions provided for removing my old belt and installing this one. They do provide several sets of instructions based upon what type of treadmill you have, but I still found that the most appropriate set for my machine was a little vague. Some more easily interpretable diagrams would have been nice. I ended up getting stuck about halfway through removal of the original belt because I couldn't locate a part on the machine that was referred to. At that point I just decide to `wing it', as far as getting the belt off. Then, having abandoned the instructions, I basically reversed my steps to get the new one on. After some minor adjustment to the tension, it works like a charm. Overall, I'm happy - with the product and the service.

I bought this item a year ago. I liked the sturdy design and the advanced console. We use it mainly for morning excercise for approx 2 hours every day (6 - 8 miles a day). I have no problem with the actual treadmill itself but the "advanced" console is becoming a real issue. I called Life Fitness and had to replace the console. Reason: HR was going on and off and sometimes showing 50 HR a minute while running? I am not that fit to have such a low HR. This can potentially be very dangerous as you will be running and the HR is showing 120 while in fact you are at 170 HR per minute. The service person came, aknowledged the problem and requested a new console which was installed 3 months ago. This one seemed to be more reliable for a while but I have now the same issues as a few months ago. HR going on and off. I am walking at 3.5 miles an hours with an incline of 4 and after while my HR disappears and appers again every few seconds and showing the incorrect HR. So if I touch with my hands the sensors I am seeing the correct HR but I cannot reply on the wireless strap. By the way the batteries in the strap are new. The service person game me 3 straps and they all have the same issue so it must be the console. Since this is happening constantly I cannot use the Cardio exercise program. This treadmill is almost US$ 3000 and the console itself is US$ 700. I believe the console has definitively a design flaw with probably some cheap wireless sensors in it. I hope Life Fitness will finally acknowledge the problem and resolve it once for all.

I have a Smooth 5.25 Folding Treadmill and the belt is very tight. It's difficult to raise the belt in order to apply the silicon but with the Lube-n-Walk Deluxe Treadmill Maintenance Kit, it's much easier to apply from one side of the belt to the other because of the long flexible applicator. It was recommended to me by an exercise repair tech who services the local health club equipment. If you've purchased this set before, a notice was enclosed in the box that there had been a change to the way the silicon is supplied in this set. I understand that previously it was supplied in small individual treatment bottles, but is now just one bottle. I didn't find it messy to use and by keeping the applicator in the plastic bag, it doesn't need to be cleaned between uses. The additional parts of this set weren't really necessary since my treadmill came with it's own adjustment tools.

As opposed to trying to spread silicon under the belt without any additional assistance, this will be my preferred method.

I research my purchases out to the point of obsession. I can tell you that you have to becareful what you read as there are "Product Reviews" out there that are put out there by the companies selling bad products. You can tell this because the reviews will show the product to be bad and excellent at the same time (depending on what you read and from who).

Do your research and weight your evaluation based on what is important to you. Read BLOGs by runners... Marathon'ers are a good source of info since running "is their life". People that have bought equipment also tend to recommend what they have bought--good or bad--they are still trying to convience themselves they made the right purchase. Also have had people giving me well-intentioned recommendations on garbage they have seen on TV from reputable companies like "The Nordic Track Tread-Walker".

I did a spreadsheet evaluation (Compartive Analysis) based on weighting the things important to me were durability, strenght of equiment (to handle heavy runners), shock absorbtion, roller diameter, incline height, stability of platform, quietness, programming features (including HR feature)... and more.

I bought this treadmill based on the fact I am a heavy runner at 250 lbs (technically I shouldn't even be running--on asphalt anyway)... the unit is built solid, has a lifetime warranty on the motor and frame and 1 yr in home service on electronics, etc. It went together well... very solid. Required two people to assemble... one to put tension on the frame so it would go together and screw holes would line up. That is good though... results in a very rigid structure.

The shock absorbtion feature... actually two automobile type shock absorbers is fantastic... I know saving my old joints on my 53 year old body from abuse. It is like running on the beach... along the edge of the surf. I can see about 1/4-1/2" of movement at each step while I run and ajustable.

It is like having a Gorilla running on a treadmill... a good wide track to handle me too... and my wife says my gait is comparable. I love this machine!! Easy to run and program too. It comes with a Polar Heart Rate transmitter strap you put around your chest and transmits to the treadmill and the treadmill is smart enought to vary the incline (up to 15 deg) and speed to keep your heart at target!! Fandamntastic!!

It is quiet too... my 18 year old athletic son runs on it and I can hear his steps downstairs (from the kitchen above) but not the machine. You can't hear the electric incline feature operate at all. The machine is just smooth as hell and the thing that talked me into it was an account by a marathoner that was looking for something that would save him on joint wear and tear he experinced running on asphalt.

Too expensive for ya you say? By a cheaper machine and you may pay more in repairs and it won't be available to you when you need it. Here is the deal on that... I paid $2K. If you aren't going to spend at least $1500 on a treadmill don't even buy one. Treadmills need to be build very well to last even a year of abuse and I have a family of 5 running on it plus on Gorilla... ha. Just look at your local fitness center... 10 treadmills and about half of them out of commission at any time--overbuy on the treadmill folks and you won't be sorry--or buy something else.

Don't get sucked into the TV ads either for the latest gimmicks... I found out that Bowflex(tm) "Tread Climber" thing... you can't run on that AT ALL!! Plus easy to fall on and get mangled in the moving treads. Considering an Elliptical? Better try it out somewhere... they often don't follow natural body movement... you have to force your body to do something that just doesn't feel right. Running is a great thing if you can take the joint-impact-damage out of it... I think the Smooth 9.35HR does that... great buy.

Hope this leads someone out there to making a good smart purchase... my only incentive... I do not have any relationship to Smooth Fitness at all (not a Stock holder, invester, etc.) and don't sell them either.

We purchased the LifeSpan TR 3000 Treadmill to help us with our exercise routines. We have been researching fitness equipment for over a year and this treadmill had a lot of positive reviews...and to be quite honest in watching the Biggest Loser they seem to use the treadmill and bike the most during their workouts so those are the items we chose to buy. Between my husband and myself, we use it to walk / jog about 5 miles 3 days a week and use the bike 2 of the other days. It is solid. The motor is very quiet, and doesn't even flinch when my husband jogs (245 lbs). The handlebar speed and incline buttons are great! The running surface is nice at 20" wide.

The drawbacks were nominal but wanted to mention. The machine is big and heavy - so have others there to assist when assembling. We had to take our unit to the basement and my husband got some help from a neighbor and a furniture dolly. It took about a week from the time that I ordered until the time I got a call from the delivery company. I am not sure if this is for all deliveries but the driver would not bring this into our house. He did put it in the garage until my husband got home.

I would strongly recommend this treadmill.

I bought a treadmill from proform and a month later it broke down. I sent them an e-mail and told them about it. They keep telling me to try this and to try that and one day the E-mails stopped. I called them and said non of this is working could you send somebody out. They said sure for $140. I said no this is covered in the warranty. Turns out since I never actually "asked" them to come out and fix it that it was not included in the warranty and since the 90 days was up they were no longer obligated to fix it. A dirty little trick since I complained of the malfunction while the warranty was still active. Turns out that the e-mails stopped right at the 90 day mark when the warranty expired.

I paid the $140 to have somebody come out. The money was withdrawn from my account withing minutes of the phone call. However, a technician was not sent out until 8 weeks later after I called them several times. One time they tried to charge me again for the repair call. To fix the machine would have cost me more than I paid so it ended up going to salvation army. Even the technician said that proform was a shady company. Not only do they pull this type of thing all the time but they lie about the treadmills. This treadmill advertised that it could handle people up to 250 pounds, yet the repair man told me he would not suggest that any one over 160 pounds use it.

Proform is a terrible company who makes a terrible product and I will never do business with them again. Don't waste you time or your money on this piece of garbage. I cannot stress enough that you should stay clear from these scam artists.

I looked at all the treadmills out there before purchasing this one. I found its ergonomics to be superior to others - I'm 5'2" tall and some of the models had handrails that were very uncomfortable for my size.

I use my treadmill on the manual setting and like the fact that if I'm interrupted it doesn't go into a sleep mode and lose my time/distance. I generally walk at 3.4 mph and a 15% incline - having reduced my speed from 4 mph and a bit lower incline due to aging feet. One of the factors that weighed into my decision was the fact that Precor allows a greater incline than some others.

If you are going to spend the money on a good treadmill, I definitely recommend the Precor models.

I have had this product for two years and it has been great. Me and my wife both use it with no problems or maintenace required. I had a Pro-Form before this and it was Junk!! The belt would slip and move side to side. I had two rollers break and a circuit board go out all in about 3 years. This is a Fitness Center quality piece of equipment at a sporting goods price. The controls are simple but advanced. The automatic feature to raise the deck is really nice and safe. I would buy the same model tommorrow! Also I called the service line once because I had a oil warning light come on and they were very helpful.

I bought this treadmill on Amazon.com for $1490 with free shipping. It is listed elsewhere for $3499 with $329 for shipping! As soon as it was delivered, I saw how massive it is. It weighs 550 pounds! This made my old "heavy duty" 298 pound model look like a toy. After setting it up in my basement with the help of 3 very strong friends, I realized the quality of the unit. It has a 3.5 hp motor, 3 1/2" rollers, heavy duty 20 x 60" belt, and a 350 pound weight capacity. It has an LCD TV and many other features including a wireless heart monitor. The operation is very smooth and quiet. I believe it will last many years with hard use. I gave it only 4 stars because the television doesn't come with integrated speakers. I would definitely buy this product again (but should not need too for a long time). Three of us run on this machine and really like it. Set-up was not too complicated and it has good simple straight-forward operating instructions and intuitive controls. The motion control is very convenient. Just wave your hand over a sensor to speed-up or slow down. You can also easily turn on and off the motion controls. The operating panel has somewhat of a high profile, so a person under 5'4" or so may have trouble seeing over it to watch TV. My daughter is 5'6" and has no trouble.

For all those who might be considering some home exercise equipment I thought I might share my experience. If it helps even one person avoid buying a bad product (a NordicTrack eliptical) from a bad company (ICON Fitness), it will be worth the time for me to write this all down. So here's the story:

Last fall, my wife & I decided that we were going to invest in some exercise equipment for the house. We weren't making it to the gym enough to justify our memberships and the thought was that if we had some equipment at home, we would use it. So we looked around at the brands we knew from the gym (Precor and another premium brand) and found out that those products were really expensive. Now we knew we didn't want one of the ultra cheap ones because neither of us believed that they would last, so instead we decided that we would go for a nice high end model from our local sporting goods store. Ultimately, we tried out a few and opted for the NordicTrack 990 AudioStrider. It had the functionality that we wanted, had a variety of programs, and was in our price range of $1,000 - $1,250. We thought we were thinking ahead when we even spent the extra $125 on a 3 year extended warranty.

So we got home with the machine and I set it up in our exercise room, and needless to say we were pretty excited and started to use it immediately. Over the next few weeks, both my wife and I worked up to using it at least 5 day a week for about 30 minutes a session. Over the course of those first weeks we started to hear a few clacks, squeaks and mild scraping noises which we didn't pay too much attention to - they didn't seem to affect the operation. However, about the same time we started to notice that the front ramp wasn't working like it was supposed to. While the ramp would go up and down as commanded, when ever it was in the 'up' position, the ramp would slowly lower of its own accord over the course of the next 2-3 minutes until it was in the lowest possible position. We could reset it back to its top position with the controls, but it would always slowly slip back down to the lowest incline. This was a nuisance that we put up with because we were both busy during the days with work and didn't have the time to be at home to meet a repairman.

Round about 3 months in, the vibrations started to get really bad and so I broke down and called NordicTrack customer support. During that first conversation I told the (very nice) woman about the issue with the excessive vibrations and the incline ramp and she said, "Oh that sounds like a bearing problem." I didn't know anything about the engineering of the machine so I assumed that this was the problem. The customer service representative then said that she would send out the appropriate parts and when they arrived that I should contact their local customer support partner to schedule a repair. I should have seen the alarms going off at this point: NordicTrack had asked me to diagnose the problem with my own machine even though I knew nothing about it except how to use it!

When the parts arrived - 2 weeks later (!!!) - all that I received was a small plastic bag with axle grease, so I called customer service back and they said that the bearing was back-ordered and would be shipped within a few days. When I asked the customer service rep "What if that's not really the problem? My machine has already been out of commission for 3 weeks?" she responded that the parts were on the way and that we would be back up and running soon.

Another week later the parts arrived and another week later the service man finally came to fix the machine. What he found within 5 minutes was that the bearing was not the problem at all - it was the wheels that run up and down in the incline ramp which were completely disintegrated. Literally the little plastic wheels had come off of their plastic hub. Of course, the repairman didn't have these parts with him, so he had to go back and order them and schedule a new time to repair the unit. This he did and another 2 weeks later we finally had the machine repaired. All told, we had now owned the machine for about 4.5 months and fully 1/3 of that time it had been collecting dust and acting as a 200 lbs coat hanger.

About a month later, there were more clacking noises so thinking that I would get ahead of the game and call while the machine was still actually working I called to complain about the noise and reiterate that the incline ramp was still not working. Two weeks later some more parts arrived and I called out the service man to fix the machine. This time, the service man took apart the incline ramp and discovered that the bottom frame of the machine (1/8" think steel) had a giant crack in it and was unrepairable. Needless to say we were very angry because now we had something that we couldn't use at all.

I waited a few days before calling customer support to allow the service tech to file all his paperwork. When I called they immediately started to give me the run around. I finally told them that I just wanted a refund and I'd be done with the whole experience. I was told that they only provided replacements and not refunds on used equipment. When I pushed them on this, talking to various groups from customer support, billing, returns, management, etc, I got the same old answer: "we'll send you a new one." Of course, they didn't tell me that they were currently out of stock and wouldn't ship for a few weeks - I had to find that out when I called them back for the 3rd time to ask about removal of the broken machine and installation of the replacement.

When I asked about this last topic, they told me that I could "throw away the broken machine" but that I was going to have to "assemble the new one on my own because I didn't pay for the original one to be assembled." When I asked them where I was supposed to dispose of a 200 lb machine that is 6 feet long and not particularly mobile, their answer was: "Just put it out by the curb with a 'Free' sign on it." At this point I just about went ballistic but managed to maintain my cool.

And one more funny note to all this: I asked about the warranty on the new machine and they said that the warranty of the new machine is effective from the date of purchase of the original (broken) machine. Since the broken machine was bought nearly 8 months ago now, the new machine (whenever it eventually arrives) will only have maybe 3 months of warranty left on it! And this was after the first machine was out of commission for nearly 4 of the 8 months of which we have owned it.

So that brings us up to today. I am now waiting for my new machine to be delivered and while I wait I have a 200 lb coat hanger in my exercise room. I will soon have a machine which the manufacturer will not even warranty and which I know will break down about every 2 months.

If I can say one thing about this whole experience it is this: please learn from my mistake and don't do business with NordicTrack or ICON fitness. Their products are garbage, they don't support their customers and their customer service representatives and processes are purposefully designed to frustrate their customers and get them to the date when their product warranties expire.

We have this treadmill at school for our PE students so I figured it would be a good choice for me. It is easy to use and is very sturdy when walking or jogging. Other treadmills I see seem really cheaply made compared to this one. It weighs 300 pounds and is a commercial treadmill so it may not have the personalized user settings others may have. I am walking about 2 miles a day right now about 5 days a week and the impact on my joints and feet is so much better than walking in the park. This is a very long treadmill so if you daydream and lag a bit, you won't fall off the back. It seems like the quality and the warranty make it a good buy and Amazon had the best price. I got my treadmill just after the Christmas holidays for my home. I and my husband are in our 60's. It is very heavy and we had a chore getting upstairs to where we had to put it. Keep that in mind when ordering. Also the manual is too vague, in my opinion, on how to maintain the treadmill. Even after reading the below keep in mind I am NOT unhappy with this machine I just have a few issues that I wanted to share.

After just a month the belt stopped in mid use. We called the 1-888-815-5559 customer service number and they said it sounded like a curcuit breaker went. They sent a new one for us to replace it with. It was a complete panel. The new one did not fit with the screws that came on the old one so we had to get longer screws. Also the original panel only had one black round cylinder (not sure what it was) and when the new panel came it had two. It was easy to replace and has worked for about 4 weeks.

The last time I used it I got an hour on the treadmill when the belt stopped again. This time we unplugged and plugged it back in and it started back up and is still working. We were told by the customer rep that we should have a surge protector and a designated outlet for the treadmill which was not mentioned in the manual and which we now have. The instructions tell you what needs to be done but does not give complete instructions. (example: lubricate deck and belt is one of the troubleshooting tips yet it doesnt' tell you how or with what.)

Previously, I had owned a low- to mid-level NordicTrac (made by Icon Fitness). It was okay for a while, but the frame actually cracked along the welding after about 6 months (I'm heavy for a runner, but not THAT heavy). We took it back, and it was replaced with a similar model (our model had been discontinued in the interim. In no time at all, that NordicTrac developed another crack in the frame, and the belt quickly slipped so much that it became unusable. I know that belts are normal wear and tear, but it wasn't worth investing in a home repair. At the same time, I was tired of the gym and couldn't get there as often as I wanted to--so I decided to invest in a decent treadmill. I did a ton of research and settled on the Sole S77. It has been a fantastic investment. I'm on it 3 - 4 times a week, and it's as solid as the models in the gym. It's quiet, and I feel like I can really RUN on it without fear of it coming apart. For a sub-$2000 treadmill, it's unbelievable (and various 3rd-party reviews consistently rank it highly). The speed and incline buttons on the side rails are very convenient, as is the MP3 hook-up on the panel (I don't have to hold my player in my hand or pocket). One more thing--the heart-rate programs, which were a joke on the NordicTrac--are great on the S77. It uses a speed and incline to keep you largely in your target zone, and seems to "learn" your body's response (for example, the first couple of times, it would go too high, then drop me to a walking speed--but after a week or so, it keeps me in range 80% to 90% of the time). It also seemed to learn that I prefer running harder, as opposed to increasing the incline, to increase my heart rate, maybe because an incline made my heart rate shoot up much more quickly than increasing the speed, which kept me smoothly in the zone I had chosen. The built-in speakers are just okay; but they're not bad at all for those times when you just don't feel like using headphones. Delivery from Amazon was quick, and the delivery guys were very courteous to my wife, offering to move it wherever she wanted. Great machine, great service!

I myself is a Proform treadmill customer and tortured by their customer services. I also found some reviews on the internet mentioning their machines broke down in several months after purchase. (Mine in three months.) The strategy of the customer service is basically make wild guesses of what went wrong and send you the parts asking you to replace it by yourself. (In one occasion, they even asked me to take off the motor and find a local garage to test the motor to see if it's good.)These back-and-forth guessing games normally drag on for months, and eventually they claim the warranty expired and they can no longer serve you, even though it's still within one year.
I believe you are looking for a treadmill for exercise, not to practice your debate skill over the phone with some customer service keep saying: "this is our policy."

Sole F80 Treadmill (2008 Model)

I'm writing this review here because this is the site that helped me decide to buy this peice of junk. It seemed at the time, there was a lot of great reviews for this treadmill, and I really researched well I felt. The treadmills best feature is that it has a nice look to it. It does look nice in my den.

When I first set it up and started using it, it had an annoying whistle sound. I called the service department and requested some help, and a rep called me back explaining that my problem was common, and tried to confuse me with all kinds of technical treadmill jargon. He basicly told me it will go away after a few weeks. The whistle never went away to this day, and I have just learned to ignore it as I listen to music when I use the machine anyway. I was too annoyed to call back for help on it. This was the least of my problems with this machine though...

After 11 months of use, the machine now has a loud sound from the tail end of the machine, and sounds like something is loose. It's so loud, that I can't even use it now, for I fear something else may get damaged. I called the service deptartment again, and they are so cheap, they send me an email of steps on how to adjust some bolts on the deck. The rep, whose name was Travis Lawrence, seemed to be sure this was the problem. Of course after I did this, the loud noise is still there. I called back and asked to have a technician get sent out and do any further work on it. So now the rep emails me and says he fed exed a new deck and roller and it will arrive next week, and a service company will contact me in 2-7 days. After I waited a week, I emailed back, and told him no parts showed up and no one called from a service company. He then emails me back saying the parts were ordered the week they were suppose to arrive, and now they will arrive the following week, and a service comapny will call me after the holidays, the second week of Jan 09!!

This is unacceptable, and I bought this peice of junk due to their great warranty offer, but I wish I would of knew how crappy the warranty service would be! By the way, I hope Amazon leaves this review here, it is a true and real experience from a real person, and every buyer should be allowed to hear my experience before they buy from Sole! I'm going to make sure I tell everyone I noww to stay clear from this company.

The only reason I can't give this unit 5 stars is that I didn't realize until it arrived that there really is no shock absorption or cushion mechanism for the running deck.

The unit arrived very promptly. Early in fact and the local freight company that CEVA/Eagle subbed the final delivery to carried the box into my exercise room from the back patio. They were able to pull their truck around the back of my house and use their pallet jack to get it to the sliding glass door so it's not like I made them carry it up a flight of stairs or anything...

Anyway, the unit arrived very well packed and was fully assembled except for 4 bolts and two trim plates that each required 3 screws. We are not large people but I did want a stable, solidly built unit and despite the Made in China markings - I'd say the build quality is pretty darn good.

At 300lbs it is not a one person job to move the box but if you can get it somewhere in the same room - it has wheels and once it is raised, one person can move it on a carpeted floor or the wheels will work well on a hard surface floor.

Finally - while it is too recent to comment on the durability - I selected this unit for the Lifetime motor/frame warranty but also - the unit is covered Parts & Labor for 5 years. Although the in-home service period is 1 year on this unit - for Amazon's killer price of $799 - this thing was a steal!

Thanks to Amazon Free Super Saver Shipping I am into a top notch treadmill for less than $800! I almost rolled the dice and cheaped out with a $599 Horizon but I read so many awful reviews about the damges due to poor shipping packaging and read many other reviews online about the flaky quality and decided to spend a little more for a unit with a better warranty. While I did seriously consider the Sole F63 at $1063 on Amazon - but we are not serious runners nor could I justify the $300 difference for a 3 year in home warranty vs. the Lifecore's 1. All in all - another super deal from Amazon. If this thing had a cushioned deck or the durability is there, them it really deserves 5 stars.

PS - I got this before the price went up - it is now $1099. At this price - I might have gone for the Sole F63

I purchased the Smooth FItness 5.25 treadmill looking for a foldable machine that was powerful and sturdy enough to endure multiple hard workouts per day. This machine has proven up to the challenge and more. It is durable, extrmely quiet, and with enough horsepower to satisfy even the most ardent athlete. The belt is fairly wide and the displays easily viewed. I am extremely happy with my purchase.
The only negative, if you can call it that, is that this treadmill is very heavy and you will definitely need 2 people to put it together.

I put it on with no problems but when running on it it tends to slip. So I am thinking it's too loose. Might be my tread's problem but I don't know yet. It's a great quality tread belt however. Feels like it will last longer then the orig did.

Sole F83 Treadmill (2008 Model)

This is my first treamill purchase. I evaluated the Bowflex and the Sole, and I'm glad I got the Sole. After trying both out in the store, this one was easier to figure out the programs, and the deck seemed to be softer. We've had it for a little over a month now, and no problems. I use it almost every day and it works perfectly. Well, except for the fact that when I run, it squeaks a little. Since I'm a rookie at the treadmill thing, I figure I'm running on the wrong part of the deck or something. When I move back on the deck, it seems to stop. Maybe some oil will work.
